DANISJOGA BUSINESS SUCCESS SERIES — CHAPTER 12

TIN REGISTRATION: WHY YOUR BUSINESS NEEDS TO UNDERSTAND TAX ID

You have registered your business with CAC.

Congratulations! 🎉

But business registration is not the end of your compliance journey.

The next important area every entrepreneur should understand is tax registration and Tax Identification.

In Nigeria's current tax administration system, a Tax ID is used to identify taxpayers for tax administration, compliance and enforcement. For businesses, the Tax ID is linked to their CAC registration records.

So, what should an entrepreneur understand?

1️⃣ Your business needs a tax identity

A properly registered business should understand its tax obligations and ensure its tax records are properly established.

2️⃣ Don't assume CAC registration means your tax obligations are finished

CAC registration and tax administration are related but are not the same thing.

Your business may have additional tax registration, filing and compliance responsibilities depending on its circumstances and activities.

3️⃣ Keep your business information accurate

Your business name, CAC registration details and tax records should be consistent.

Incorrect or outdated information can create unnecessary compliance problems.

4️⃣ Understand your tax obligations

Don't wait until you receive a tax notice before asking:

"What taxes apply to my business?"

Understand your obligations early.

5️⃣ Keep proper records

Good accounting records help you understand your business performance and support proper tax compliance.

💡 BUSINESS LESSON

Registering your business is the beginning of formalisation. Understanding your tax responsibilities is part of building a compliant business.

The current official NRS Tax ID portal provides a facility for organizations to retrieve their Tax ID using their CAC name or RC number.
