SCUML REGISTRATION: DOES YOUR BUSINESS NEED IT?

You have registered your business with CAC.

You have your Tax ID.

But there is another important question:

Does your business require SCUML registration?

SCUML means Special Control Unit against Money Laundering.

It is concerned with the registration, monitoring and AML/CFT compliance of relevant Designated Non-Financial Businesses and Professions (DNFBPs) in Nigeria.

Some of the businesses/professions covered by the current framework include:

🏠 Real estate businesses
💎 Dealers in precious stones and metals
🚗 Automobile dealers
🏨 Hotels
⚖️ Legal practitioners and related professionals
📊 Accountants and accounting firms
💼 Consultants and consulting companies
🏗️ Construction companies
💍 Jewellery businesses
🛒 Certain dealers in high-value goods
✈️ Travel agencies and other listed sectors

The exact applicability depends on the nature and activities of the business.

💡 WHY SHOULD AN ENTREPRENEUR CARE?

If your business falls within a designated category, SCUML is not something you should simply ignore.

Businesses subject to the relevant AML/CFT framework may have responsibilities relating to:

✅ Registration
✅ Customer due diligence
✅ Record keeping
✅ Reporting obligations
✅ Compliance procedures
✅ Monitoring of transactions and customers

The NFIU also operates reporting systems for DNFBPs and other reporting entities. Its current registration portal asks organizations for information such as RC number, organization name, entity type, regulator and sector.

⚠️ IMPORTANT

Don't assume that because your business has CAC registration, you automatically have all the regulatory approvals you need.

Your business activities determine which additional registrations, licences or compliance requirements may apply.
